The One (And Only) Thing You Need To Do To Start Living A Holistic Lifestyle

When Tonia and I first becoming more conscious of living a more holistic lifestyle we came upon a slew of overwhelming information. Everyone seemed to have a differing opinion of what should be done and what should not. Some said you need to change your diet first, some said that we needed to meditate all day, others said we needed to become minimalists and live in a 50 square foot shack! It was super confusing and it seemed that we were fulled in many different directions every day.

Now that we have come through on the other side and I have had quite a bit of time to really think this topic over the answer to this question unequivocally points to one answer. The one, and only, thing that I needed to do to live more holistically was to change my mindset.

I realize how cliche and simplistic that statement may seem but its the absolute truth. Without re-framing how I viewed the world and how I fit into it I never would have taken the action required to live this way. More over, the moment that a hurdle or challenge was presented to me I would have quit. You see, once you see yourself playing a different role in the world you will then NEVER stop or accept anything less until you achieve it. 


For the first 30 years of my life I never considered myself to be exceptional. I was quiet, meek, insecure, never stood up for myself and didn't believe that I didn't believe I was very smart. As I grew I began to realize that if I was going to become something more than what I was I needed to start to believe that I could be something more.

I always admired the well spoken, well dressed, in good shape, confident, funny and polite gentleman that I would often see come into my office at 11 AM. This man would saunter in without a care in the world and was just loving life. He drove up in a Land Rover but wore jeans and his favorite band t-shirt. He made me feel like I was important even though he came into my shop and I was the salesman (Isnt it my job to make him feel good?) Who was that guy? And how do I be him?

Eventually I realized that in order to be like that I needed to start thinking like he did. I needed to process the world in the same way. But how could I do that if I didn't already think like that?

I started to seek out information that would change the way in which I saw the world. Below is a list of things that helped me through this process:

WATCHING DOCUMENTARIES

Documentaries are a great way to get a lot of information into you mind quickly. They are also incredibly abundant and can be consumed on many different platforms. Netflix, topdocumentaryfilms.com, watchdocumentaries.com, documentaryheaven.com or even YouTube. This was exactly how we changed the way in which we approached the foods that we eat. We locked ourselves in our home for 2 weeks over a Christmas holiday, watched every documentary we could find on the food industry which changed the way we say our food. From there, we took action and never accepted anything less because we viewed everything differently. See how it works

READ

Now Im not much of a reader, nor do I have the desire to be. I don't have the comprehension or patience for it. Im sure if I practiced it would be different but luckily we live in a world where I dont need to rely on this. I use a wonderful app called Audible in order to listen to books. This allows me to listen to books far faster than I could read them and I can retain them better. I realize this doesn't work for everyone but for me it is essential

FIND A MENTOR

For me this was key. I knew that if I was to move forward that I would need to follow in the footsteps of someone that I would like to be like. The problem was that I didn't have anyone in my life that I could approach with this.  So how did I solve this problem?

The internet is a wonderful place.....

I sought out mentorship online. In my travels on YouTube I came across a few YouTubers that really helped to reframe my mind. They said things that I had never heard before and spoke with such passion and intensity that I couldn't help but take notice. As I watched their videos their thoughts slowly became my thoughts. I consumed hundreds of hours of content and in that time I began to think and therefore act differently. I started to come out of my shell. I had thoughts, opinions, conversations, confidence, enthusiasm...everything I always wanted to be but didn't know how to be. This was a HUGE transition period for me.

Oh, In case you are wondering, the man that I followed so closely that helped to turn me into the man I am is Elliot Hulse.  I call him my online father figure!

PODCASTS

Listening to Podcasts has become a daily habit for me now. I especially love interview style podcasts. Listening to these feels just like you are in the room with the folks on the podcast. The major benefit of these is that the conversations seem to overwrite the dialogue that already runs through my mind. No offence to my own internal dialogue but I find that sometimes it doesn't serve me as well as other peoples thoughts might. 

As an example, whenever I don't feel much like taking the world on I consciously listen to a Podcast from the Joe Rogan Experience with David Goggins. I need to be spoken aggressively to in order to get out of my funks an this podcast does that perfectly for me. After about a half hour of listening to this podcast I can already feel myself feeling restless and anxious to get after it!
